Important things to know

  • Bachelor of Music or equivalent required in proposed area of study
  • Sophomore-level foreign language credit required for musicology, theory, composition, voice and voice pedagogy
  • GRE not required for admission
  • Submit applications by Dec. 1 for priority scholarship and assistantship consideration

Applicant Checklist 

Complete the School of Music Application.

As part of your application, the following items are required: 

  • Pre-screening Video: Submit a video performance for review.
  • Personal Statement: A one-page statement outlining your experience, vocational goals and how the TCU program will help you achieve them.
  • References: Provide the names and emails of three individuals qualified to assess your musical achievement, teaching/professional experience and potential for success. Letters will be requested electronically via Acceptd.
  • CV or résumé. For Collaborative Piano, include a repertoire list for both solo and collaborative pieces.
  • Transcripts: Submit unofficial transcripts of all colleges attended. An English translation of all international transcripts is required. DO NOT mail official transcript at this time. The School of Music does not require official transcripts unless you are admitted or are requesting an exemption to International English Proficiency Scores
    • Transcripts/Graduation Certificates may be sent in an electronic format using a service such as National Student Clearinghouse. 
    • Preferred method for all official transcripts is electronic sent via an official electronic transcript service from each issuing institution directly to tcugradstudies@tcu.edu
  • International Applicants: Submit a TOEFL or English proficiency exam score. 
    • Minimum requirements: 100 iBT, 7 IELTS, or 120 Duolingo.
    • The TOEFL may be waived for students with a degree from an English-instruction university.
    • Scores must be sent directly to TCU (school code: 6820).

Complete the Music Theory Diagnostic Test.

A prescreening video is required for all applicants. Learn more about the pre-screening video and live audition requirements for your academic division.

You will be notified if you advance to the audition round.

In-Person Audition Dates:

  • Saturday, Jan. 25
  • Saturday, Feb. 1
  • Saturday, Feb. 8

Virtual Audition Dates:

  • Arranged with the Coordinator of Admissions.

All entering graduate students must take placement exams during the first week of residency and fulfill keyboard and theory proficiencies. All exam sections must be completed satisfactorily before admission to candidacy.
