Computer Lab

The Prep Division’s computer lab is offered to give all students enrolled in private lessons the opportunity to work on music theory outside of that lesson. Older students also work on music creativity and composition with advanced theory and notation programs.

Music Focus: Theory

Music Theory enhances students’ private piano lessons. Goal: to supplement music theory knowledge for all piano students and prepare for the TMTA theory test, if taken. Students are supervised and guided through work on music theory apps, programs, and worksheets, appropriate to their piano skills and school grade.  Included in the curriculum is sight-reading and repertoire enhancement with our online sight-reading program. Students have 30-minute sessions in the Computer Lab before or after their private lessons.  Students receive 6 points toward the Participation Award.

Music Focus: Reading

A pianist with solid sight-reading abilities will be stronger in other musical endeavors. Developments in music apps and research show improvement in pianists’ sight-reading skills via regular assessments. Our goal is to develop fluent and independent sight-readers at all levels of playing. Students come in weekly to work solely on sight-reading in our online program in the computer lab. Observation by the lab instructor greatly enhances students’ progress, and helps students develop strong practice habits. Students have 15-minute sessions before or after their private piano lessons. Students receive 3 points toward the Participation Award.

Weekly lab sessions are tailored for each individual student, based on age and theory comprehension. The coordinator works with the students’ private lesson teachers in order to make sure that the Computer Lab experience enhances the students’ progress in the private lesson and in lab.
