student playing the violin for a performance

The School of Music offers two violin studios with masterclasses from renowned artists, plus orchestral excerpt classes and mock auditions led by Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Michael Shih.

The violin studios include undergraduate, graduate, and artist diploma students who regularly participate in:

  • Weekly Private Lessons: TCU violin lessons provide personalized, one-on-one instruction, focusing on technique, concertos, sonatas and audition excerpts.
  • Weekly Studio Class: Students gain performance experience in a supportive environment, developing listening skills and offering peer feedback.
  • Solo Recitals: Violin students perform recitals on and off campus, often with pianist Edward Newman. Recital requirements are:
    • Two recitals for BM students
    • One recital for BME students
    • Two recitals for MM students
    • Three recitals for DMA students
    • Four recitals for Artist Diploma students
  • Student Ensembles: Students have opportunities to perform with various ensembles in the School of Music, including the TCU Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Musicum TCU, and New Music Ensemble.
