Video Audition Requirements

Attention!  Dance Audition Application must be completed in addition to these video requirements in order to submit a complete video audition.  See audition application at dance.tcu.edu.  Video Audition is DUE November 1, 2019 by 11:59pm. Notification of audition outcome by November 30, 2019.  Video auditions are for program acceptance only.  For dance scholarship consideration, in-person audition is required.

MEDIA AUDITIONS – applicants should upload video to YouTube or other online video platform and saved in the unlisted format. This enables us to view the video but does not allow the video to be found in a random search, thereby protecting your privacy. Provide the link where specified on the audition application or you can send the link directly to dance@tcu.edu.  Please adhere to length requirements listed below.  Music is not required.  Any corresponding emails must be marked with your name, address and program (BFA, Ballet and/or Modern Dance) desired at TCU.

MODERN DANCE/CONTEMPORARY APPLICANTS:

 The applicant should choose dancewear that clarifies the outline of the body including joints, skeletal alignment, and muscular involvement.  Filming should be done against a background that offers the strongest contrast between dancer and space and so that movements are clearly visible.  Do not film in costume and do not film into a mirror.

1.  Technique: The audition media should begin with a short technical demonstration in the tradition most familiar to the applicant.  Exercises and combinations that comprise the warm-up should be clear and concise, and performed on both sides.  Please mount the camera on a tripod and include alternate views (front and side).  Include a sampling of warm-up (max 3 minutes), center (max 3 minutes) and traveling combinations (max 3 minutes).  The demonstration will be viewed regarding the following: alignment, use of weight, dynamic range, spatial clarity, musicality, focus, connectivity and artistry/quality of presentation.

2.  Those who train in and practice improvisation may include a 2-3 minute improvised segment. Please outline and communicate the parameters of the improvisation.

3.  A one-minute contemporary solo performed by the candidate.  May be self-choreographed or created by someone other than candidate.

Please note that total video audition for prospective modern dance/contemporary majors should not exceed 12 minutes in length.

 4.  Candidates must also provide (separately for the audition video) the Introductory Video required on the Audition Application and may also submit supplementary materials as desired (for example: own choreography)

BALLET APPLICANTS:

Dress Code:

Women: Pink or flesh tone tights, solid color leotard that offers color contrast to the background space.  Hair secured away from face and off neck to offer clearest view.  Ballet shoes and pointe shoes.

Men: Black/grey/white tights; solid color, fitted t-shirt that offers color contrast to the background space.  Socks and ballet shoes.  Hair secured away from face and off neck for clearest view.

1.  Men and Women: Brief barre work: (Please film in profile) including plié, tendu, dégagé, rond de jambe par terre, fondu/développé, petite rond de jambe en l’air and grand rond de jambe, frappé and petite battement, grand battement.  Do not repeat each exercise for each side; simply alternate sides for each exercise; may combine exercises.  Do not exceed a total of 3-4 minutes of barre demonstration.

2.  Center: (please film from front) Do not film in costume and do not film into a mirror.  Do not exceed 6-7 minutes total for center but include all bulleted items:

  • Grand adagio-including développé in each direction, promenade, pirouettes en dehors and en dedans, one grand pirouette, and one balance of at least 4 measures in a large pose (arabesque or attitude)
  • Pirouettes from fourth position en dehors and en dedans
  • Petit allegro combination with batterie
  • Medium allegro including sissone and sauté fouetté
  • Grand allegro

3.a. Women only – Pointe requirements

  • Eight, slow relevé in first position, sustaining the “top” of the relevé long enough for ankle alignment to be visible
  • One center combination that includes pirouette en dehors and successive relevé, at least eight relevé, on one leg
  • A classical variation – standard repertoire – 1- 1.5 minutes in length

3.b. Men only

  • An allegro combination with beats and tour en l’air
  • A classical variation – standard repertoire – 1-1.5 minutes in length
