Chonglin Xu playing the piano

TCU School of Music student Chonglin Xu has won the inaugural Steve Kahng International Piano Competition, held as part of the 16th Texas State International Piano Festival in San Marcos.

“When I heard my name as the winner, I was totally shocked and really moved,” Xu said. “This competition means a lot to me, and all the hours I spent preparing made this win feel especially meaningful.”

The competition is the newest addition to the festival's series of internationally recognized piano competitions and places a strong emphasis on career development. Rather than focusing solely on cash prizes, the competition provides professional opportunities designed to help emerging artists establish and advance their careers.

A Prize Designed for Career Development
As the inaugural winner, Xu will receive a professional recording session for a full-length commercial album, a commercial release through a professional recording label and professionally produced video recordings for artistic and promotional use. These opportunities provide valuable visibility and experience for an emerging artist entering the next stage of their professional career.

“This recording opportunity only comes once in a lifetime, in my opinion,” Xu said. “Making my first official CD is a huge milestone on my path to becoming a professional concert pianist.”

Xu was selected from an international field of competitors and advanced through a highly competitive process judged by an independent panel. The final results were determined through a secret-ballot process among adjudicators who had no teaching relationship with any of the finalists.

Representing TCU on Stage
His victory was part of a strong showing for TCU’s piano program. Of the six finalists selected from leading conservatories and schools of music across North America, two were current students: Xu, an artist diploma student, and Alex Wong, a doctor of musical arts candidate.

“Chonglin's achievement is remarkable both because of the level of the competition and because of the unique nature of the prize,” said Enrico Elisi, associate professor of piano and Harold D. and Imogen Herndon Professor of Music. “This award provides tangible professional opportunities that can help launch the next stage of a young artist's career through commercial recording, international visibility and professional media production.”

Prior to his studies at TCU, Xu studied with Professor Jay Sun at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. He is currently pursuing an artist diploma at TCU, where he has distinguished himself through his artistic commitment and musical achievement.

The competition victory represents a significant professional milestone for Xu and provides a platform for future artistic growth through recording, media exposure and international visibility.

“I am equally proud that two TCU pianists, Chonglin Xu and Alex Wong, were selected among the six finalists,” Elisi said. “Their success reflects not only their individual artistry and dedication, but also the vibrant musical environment that exists within the TCU piano program.”
