Suki John Presents Acclaimed Choreodrama Across Europe
Suki John, professor in the School for Classical & Contemporary Dance (SCCDance), presented her choreodrama “Sh’ma: A Story of Survival” across Europe this summer, with screenings in Hungary, France, Poland and the Netherlands.
The piece, which powerfully recounts her family’s experiences and survival of the Holocaust through dance, recently earned the prestigious Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Choreography in a Feature Film.
John collaborated with several SCCDance students and alumni, as well as College of Fine Arts faculty members, to bring the production to life, including:

- Neil Anderson-Himmelspach, associate professor of music technology and music theory/composition
- Lydia Mackay, associate professor of theatre
- Keith Saunders, associate professor of professional practice
- Kellye Saunders, SCCDance adjunct faculty
- Michael Skinner, professor emeritus
- Philip Zielke, assistant professor of professional practice – technical direction
“The collaboration has been so important,” explained John. “These elements, which make storytelling interdisciplinary, are important to me because I want to create a world that the audience can immerse itself in.”
