Art Education student Amanda Pretico ’25 illustrated the Christian children’s book “How I Know He’s Real” by Charlotte Woodford. The story, told through the character Lilly Greene, follows the author’s childhood journey of discovering Jesus through nature and God’s creation.

“It is so surreal to see my name printed on the front cover and my illustrations inside a children’s book,” explained Pretico. “The next steps are to write and illustrate my own stories. This opportunity was such a blessing to me, and I feel confident to move forward and continue illustrating and sharing my stories with others.”

Last spring, Pretico learned of the opportunity through an email from the art education department about an author looking for an illustrator. Illustrating children’s books had always been a dream for Pretico, and she was immediately drawn to the project.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte, and we had an instant connection,” said Pretico. “My excitement grew when I found out her heart behind the book, which is to share the greatest story ever—the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a pleasure working with a fellow believer, using our gifts and talents to bring honor to God!”

As an art education major, Pretico credits her classes in the School of Art for helping her grow creatively, experimenting with different media and techniques.

“Being a part of the art education program has helped me grow in my artistic abilities,” said Pretico.

The art education program provides students with opportunities like Pretico’s experience to gain hands-on learning, helping them grow their portfolios and develop their skills as both artists and educators.
