Department of Design student Miseal Ortiz ’24 is quickly emerging as a leader in user experience and user interface design (UXUI), where designers evaluate users’ needs in each phase of the creative process. Last spring, Oritz was one of five students to represent TCU at Dialexa EDU, a mentorship program offering invaluable industry experience.

Dialexa, a digital product engineering firm acquired by IBM, hosts Dialexa EDU. Students from TCU, the University of North Texas and the University of Dallas compete and receive hands-on learning opportunities in problem-solving methodology, product design and engineering.

“Misael has consistently displayed a passion for his chosen field of study of UXUI Design,” said Design Senior Instructor Jan Ballard, who selected the TCU team. “During the program, he had the opportunity to develop his professional skills and expand his network.”

Oritz and his team successfully created an app from conception to delivery, implementing all the steps from design thinking to development.

“The program broadened my perspective and gave me a deeper appreciation for the dedication and hard work it takes to succeed in such a competitive and fast-paced industry,” said Oritz.

The TCU team partnered with five Dialexa mentors, including Senior Product Designer Elizabeth Ireland ’21.

“It was an incredible opportunity to get a glimpse into life at a tech startup,” said Ortiz. “I am eager to return next year and am forever grateful for the relationships, especially with our amazing Dialexa mentors.”
