Voice Audition Requirements

All applicants applying to study voice at TCU must audition for acceptance to the School of Music and separately for studio placement.

Admission Audition Repertoire Requirements (BM, BME, BA)

A total of two selections.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable

Nordan Young Artist Award Audition Requirements.

A total of three selections.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection in addition to the two above must be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable

Accompanists

An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish. Music must be uploaded in the initial online application or by message on Acceptd no later than 10 days prior to the audition. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted.

Audition Notes

  • All selections must be performed from memory.
  • All screening recordings and any audition not performed in person must be in uploaded to the Audition Request Application.
  • The audition will include a brief tonal memory and sight singing exam.

Audition Repertoire Requirements

Candidates for all graduate degrees will be asked to sight-read and translate French, German and Italian into English during the audition. Also as a prerequisite for admission to the MM in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

MM

  • One selection in English
  • Four additional selections in at least three different languages and styles
  • Two selections should be arias from opera or oratorio, please include the recitative if applicable
  • One selection should have been written since 1980

MM in Voice Pedagogy

In addition the audition requirements listed above, applicants in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15 minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. This will be uploaded as part of the Audition Request application on Acceptd.

DMA

  • Five arias selected from opera and oratorio in contrasting languages and styles, please include the recitative if applicable.
  • A thirty-minute Recital program consisting of selections representing at least four different stylistic periods and languages. One language should be English. One group should have been written since 1980.
  • The screening media file, submitted at the time of application, should contain a twenty-minute sample of the above repertoire.

DMA with a Cognate in Voice Pedagogy

In addition the audition requirements listed above, applicants for a cognate in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15 minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. This will be uploaded as part of the Audition Request application on Acceptd.

Artist Diploma Audition Repertoire Requirements

Candidates for the Artist Diploma program will be asked to sight-read and translate French, German and Italian into English during the audition. Also as a prerequisite for admission, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

  • The candidate should present at least 6 selections, including songs and arias in contrasting styles and at least 3 different languages, including English.
  • Performances should demonstrate the fullest range of the applicant’s artistry.
  • One selection should have been written since 1980.

Accompanists

An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish. Music must be uploaded either in the initial online application or by message on Acceptd no later than ten days prior to the audition. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted.
