Voice Audition Requirements

For entrance into the TCU School of Music and scholarship consideration, all applicants applying to study voice as a major or minor at TCU must audition for acceptance to the School of Music and separately for studio placement.

Admission Audition Repertoire Requirements (BM, BME, BA)

A prescreening video is required of all applicants. You will be notified if you advance to the audition round.

Prescreening Video Repertoire

A total of two selections recorded with a piano accompanist.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

Audition Repertoire

A total of two selections previously submitted as part of the pre-screening performance*.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.
  • The audition will include a brief tonal memory and sight singing exam.

*You will have the option to perform a different selection(s) as long as the updated repertoire list, with the corresponding high-quality copy piano music, is uploaded using the message feature on the Audition Request Application no less than two weeks prior to the audition.

Live auditions are recommended. If you cannot attend one of the live general audition dates, you may submit video audition recordings. You will have the option to upload videos different from those you submitted for the prescreening round. All prescreening recordings and any audition not performed in person must be in uploaded to the Audition Request Application.

NORDAN YOUNG ARTIST AWARD

Nordan auditions require a live audition. To be considered for the Nordan prescreening process, you will need to prepare repertoire as explained below. 

Nordan Prescreening Repertoire

A total of three selections recorded with a piano accompanist.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection in addition to the two above must be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

Nordan Live Audition Repertoire

A total of three selections performed with a piano accompanist*(see Accompanist information below).

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection in addition to the two above must be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

Accompanists

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  A high-quality copy of the piano music must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the Audition Request Application, no later than 14 days prior to the audition. Pre-recorded accompaniments are not permitted for the audition or prescreening recordings.

Candidates for all graduate degrees will be asked to sight-read and translate French, German and Italian into English during the audition. Also as a prerequisite for admission to the MM in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

MM

  • Two selections should be arias from opera or oratorio, please include the recitative if applicable
  • One selection should have been written since 1980

MM in Voice Pedagogy

In addition the audition requirements listed above, applicants in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15 minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. This will be uploaded as part of the Audition Request application on Acceptd.

You will have the option to perform a different selection(s) as long as the updated repertoire list, with the corresponding piano music, is uploaded using the message feature on the Audition Request Application no less than two weeks prior to the audition.

DMA

A prescreening video is required of all applicants. You will be notified if you are invited to the live audition round.

Upload prescreening recordings with piano for the same repertoire to be performed for the audition listed below to the Audition Request Application.

  • Five arias selected from opera and oratorio in contrasting languages and styles, please include the recitative if applicable.
  • A thirty-minute Recital program consisting of selections representing at least four different stylistic periods and languages. One language should be English. One group should have been written since 1980.
  • The screening media file, submitted at the time of application, should contain a twenty-minute sample of the above repertoire.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

DMA with a Cognate in Voice Pedagogy

In addition the audition requirements listed above, applicants for a cognate in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15 minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. This will be uploaded as part of the Audition Request application on Acceptd.

An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish. Artist Diploma Audition Repertoire Requirements

  • The candidate should present at least 6 selections, including songs and arias in contrasting styles and at least 3 different languages, including English.
  • Performances should demonstrate the fullest range of the applicant’s artistry.
  • One selection should have been written since 1980.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

You will have the option to perform a different selection(s) as long as the updated repertoire list, with the corresponding piano music, is uploaded using the message feature on the Audition Request Application no less than two weeks prior to the audition.
