Voice Audition Requirements

For entrance into the TCU School of Music and/or scholarship consideration, all applicants applying to study voice as a major must audition for acceptance to the School of Music and separately for studio placement.

Audition Repertoire Requirements (BM, BME, BA)

A prescreening video is required of all applicants as explained below. You will be notified if you advance to the audition round.

All auditions must be completed by February 19.

Prescreening Video Requirements

A total of two selections recorded with a piano accompanist or accompaniment track.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

A total of two selections previously submitted as part of the prescreening performance and performed with a piano accompanist*.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.
  • The audition will include a brief tonal memory and sight singing exam.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish. High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no later than 14 days prior to the audition. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted for the audition.

Live auditions are recommended. If you cannot attend one of the live general audition dates, you may submit video audition recordings. You will have the option to upload videos different from those you submitted for the prescreening round. All prescreening recordings and any audition not performed in person must be in uploaded to the School of Music Admission Application.

NORDAN YOUNG ARTIST AWARD

To be considered for the Nordan prescreening process, applicants will need to prepare repertoire as explained below and submit your complete application by December 1. Nordan auditions are invitation only and require a Live Audition on January 15, 2022.

Nordan Prescreening Requirements

Applicants not invited to Nordan are encouraged to audition on another date and will still receive scholarship consideration.

Nordan Live Audition Requirements

Accompanists

**An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no later than 14 days prior to the audition. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted for the audition.

As a prerequisite for admission to the MM in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

MM – Voice

As a prerequisite for admission to the MM in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

  • Four additional selections in at least three different languages and styles
  • Two selections should be arias from opera or oratorio, please include the recitative if applicable.
  • One selection written since 1980
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no less than 14 days prior to the audition. MM in Voice Pedagogy

In addition to the audition requirements listed above, applicants in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15-minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. This will be uploaded as part of the School of Music Admission Application.

DMA

A prescreening video is required of all applicants as explained below. You will be notified if you advance to the live audition round.

Audition candidates for all graduate degrees will be asked to sight-read and translate text excerpts in French, German and Italian into English as part of the audition. As a prerequisite for admission to the DMA in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

Prescreening Video Requirements

Audition Repertoire performed with a piano accompanist*

  • Five arias selected from opera and oratorio in contrasting languages and styles, please include the recitative if applicable.
  • A thirty-minute Recital program consisting of selections representing at least four different stylistic periods and languages. One language should be English. One group should have been written since 1980.
  • The prescreening media file, submitted at the time of application, should contain a twenty-minute sample of the above repertoire.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no less than 14 days prior to the audition.

DMA with a Cognate in Voice Pedagogy

In addition to the audition requirements listed above, applicants for a cognate in voice pedagogy must also submit a 15-minute video recording of their teaching. The teaching excerpt should include a private lesson and may include a group lesson. International students should submit a video demonstrating their ability to teach using the English language. As a prerequisite for admission to the AD in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

  • The candidate should present at least 6 selections, including songs and arias in contrasting styles and at least 3 different languages, including English.
  • Performances should demonstrate the fullest range of the applicant’s artistry.
  • One selection should have been written since 1980.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no less than 14 days prior to the audition. You will have the option to perform a different selection(s) as long as the updated repertoire list is also uploaded no less than 14 days prior to the live audition through the message feature.
