Voice Audition Requirements

For entrance into the TCU School of Music and/or scholarship consideration, all applicants applying to study voice as a major must audition for acceptance to the School of Music and separately for studio placement.

Audition Repertoire Requirements (BM, BME, BA)

A prescreening video is required of all applicants consisting of the repertoire listed below. All applicants applying for a music major and/or scholarship must audition for the applied faculty. Additionally, all first-year undergraduates invited to audition will be considered for the Nordan Young Artist award. Learn more about the Nordan Young Artist Award program.You will be notified if you advance to the audition round.

All auditions must be completed by February 18.

Prescreening Video Requirements

A total of two selections recorded with a piano accompanist or accompaniment track.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language
  • One selection of the two above may be an aria from an opera or oratorio; please include the recitative if applicable
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

Efforts to include diverse repertoire would be appreciated.

  • One selection in English
  • One selection in a foreign language

  • The audition will include a brief tonal memory and sight singing exam.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted for the audition.

Live auditions are recommended. If you cannot attend one of the live general audition dates, you may submit video audition recordings. You will have the option to upload videos different from those you submitted for the prescreening round. All prescreening recordings and any audition not performed in person must be in uploaded to the School of Music Admission Application.

Accompanists

**An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no later than 14 days prior to the audition. Prerecorded accompaniments are not permitted for the audition.

As a prerequisite for admission to the MM in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

    • Selections should include art songs and arias (oratorio, operatic, chamber music selections).
    • All selections must be sung from memory.

As a prerequisite for admission to the AD in vocal performance, all candidates must have completed intermediate French, German or Italian or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

  • The candidate should present at least 6 selections, including songs and arias in contrasting styles and at least 3 different languages, including English.
  • Performances should demonstrate the fullest range of the applicant’s artistry.
  • One selection should have been written since 1980.
  • All selections must be performed from memory.

*An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions by request or you may bring your own if you wish.  High-quality copies of the piano scores must be uploaded as a PDF in the initial online application or by message through the School of Music Admission Application no less than 14 days prior to the audition. You will have the option to perform a different selection(s) as long as the updated repertoire list is also uploaded no less than 14 days prior to the live audition through the message feature.
