BFA & BA in Studio Art

Main Content

Program overview

In addition to comprehensive training, our Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art explores art history, theory and professional practices to provide a thorough understanding of the art world.

*BFA students can transition to the BA program, provided they meet the BA credit requirements by graduation.

The Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art offers a broad exploration of artistic disciplines. The BA requires fewer studio course credits than the BFA, and students are not required to participate in the senior BFA exhibition. The program offers flexibility, allowing students to switch to the BFA in their second year, as the first-year requirements for both degrees are the same.

Our state-of-the-art facilities and inspiring studio spaces foster creativity and innovation, supporting your specialization and development in technical expertise and artistic expression:

The ceramics concentration guides students through the entire ceramic process, from clay formulation to firing. Emphasizing both contemporary and historical contexts, you’ll develop a solid foundation in techniques such as throwing, hand-building, modeling, casting, and glaze mixing, supported by well-equipped facilities including programmable kilns and raku firing options.

The new media concentration blends traditional studio arts with emerging technologies, including virtual craft, digital fabrication, and time-based media. You'll focus on craft and exhibition, learning to apply new techniques and technologies in your artistic practice.

The New Media studio includes a robotics and engineering lab equipped for creating interactive and robotic art components, while the Fabrication Lab features a variety of high-end tools that students from all disciplines frequently utilize, including:

  • CNC Mill
  • Embroidery Cachine
  • Laser Cutter/Engraver
  • Fused Deposition Modeling Printers
  • Makerbot Replicator Dual
  • Stereolithographic Printer

The painting concentration focuses on developing your unique approach to art making through individual instruction, contemporary art discussions, and class critiques. You'll refine your technical skills in both water-based and oil mediums and learn to build your own substrates using basic woodworking tools. The program also integrates new technologies, such as camera drones, plotters, and projectors, allowing you to blend traditional painting techniques with emerging trends. By graduation, you'll have a cohesive body of work and a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed as a contemporary artist in both the studio and professional world.

The photography concentration equips students for professional success in fine art photography. You'll master the subtle aspects of visual information, the craft and process of photography, and develop critical skills to analyze and engage with visual media.

The printmaking concentration provides comprehensive instruction in traditional techniques such as lithography, relief, intaglio, and screen-printing, while also exploring digital processes, papermaking, and self-published artists' books. Students are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, integrating these into their creative practice.

In the sculpture concentration, you'll investigate the interplay between ideas, materials, perceptions, and both contemporary and historical issues. Emphasis is placed on fabrication and casting skills, supported by versatile facilities for clay modeling, metal casting, mold making, carving, and welding, allowing exploration across various media.
