For 50 years, the TCU Music Preparatory Division has shaped the musical journeys of countless students, from young beginners to lifelong learners. What began in a small house on Princeton Street in 1975 has grown into a thriving program housed in Ed Landreth Hall, serving the Fort Worth community and beyond. As the division reaches this milestone anniversary, Director Lori Christ reflects on its rich history, lasting impact and bright future.

“I am very proud that we’re reaching our 50th anniversary and happy to have been involved in TCU Music Preparatory for most of those years,” said Christ. “It’s immensely satisfying to know that we have entered the worlds of so many students and had the opportunity to enrich them through music-making.”

From early childhood music classes to private lessons for students of all ages, the division offers opportunities for everyone — whether they aspire to be professional musicians or simply want to experience the joy of playing. It has also become a vital training ground for TCU students, offering valuable teaching experience and fostering mentorship between participants and aspiring educators.

“For me, a milestone is reached every time I hear from a former student who reflects on the positive impact their music instruction has had on their life,” Christ shared.

The division boasts a team of outstanding instructors dedicated to nurturing a love for music, with 27 staff members guiding 305 students currently enrolled in the program.

As the division looks to the future, its goal remains clear: to evolve with students’ changing needs and continue making music accessible to all.

“Our students range from families wanting to introduce music to their babies or toddlers to adults looking to start or refresh a hobby,” said Christ.

Beyond its classrooms, the Music Preparatory Division enriches the local arts community, inspiring, educating and sharing the joy of music across generations. At its heart, the division promotes music education which goes beyond notes and technique — it instills discipline, creativity and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
