The Fulbright Commission has awarded Caroline Jones a Fulbright scholarship to India for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Fulbright is one of the top scholarship programs in the world, and TCU boasts nearly three dozen recipients of the prestigious award.
Jones, a double major in Political Science and Design Studies and future laureate of the John V. Roach Honors College, is the sixth TCU student to win a Fulbright award to India, where she will serve as an English Teaching Assistant. She plans to use her experience as a classical ballet dancer and her background in art to develop creative learning spaces and experiences for Indian students.
Jones has taught many different kinds of students, including small Indian children who joked about her southern accent, physically and mentally disabled teenagers, young ballerinas and girls at summer camp. She strives to connect with her students in meaningful ways that move beyond linguistic and physical barriers. As a result, Jones demonstrates the teaching philosophy that a teacher must first believe in the students she is teaching, for that is a foundation for building relationships around trust and empathy, engaging thoughtfully with the community and embracing constant cultural learning.
After completing her Fulbright, Jones aims to work in communications for a nonprofit or related organization and potentially apply to graduate school to study international affairs or human rights.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in more than 140 countries throughout the world. The program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Candidates for the Fulbright apply for positions in one of six geographic regions. The U.S. Fulbright Committee reviews each application and forwards the frontrunners to the respective country’s Fulbright Commission for selection of the finalists. This year, TCU boasts eight semi-finalists, with Jones being the first to receive final notification.
