With applications pouring in from 27 states and 30 countries, including Albania, China, France, Japan and the United Kingdom, the festival’s global reputation for excellence is undeniable. This group of applicants, spanning from emerging young artists to passionate amateurs, highlights PianoTexas’ place as one of the world’s premier summer piano festivals.
We spoke with Tamás Ungár, D.M., festival founder and professor of piano, to gain insight into the festival and the careful selection process involved in choosing performers for the world-class event.
Q: What is the PianoTexas International Festival & Academy?
Ungár: The 2025 PianoTexas Festival will offer participants a truly extraordinary experience. They have the opportunity to perform with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, showcase their talents in the Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU, and refine their craft through master classes and private lessons with world-class guest artists. Additionally, they will gain access to the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, enriching their time at the festival.Â
Q: What inspired the creation of the Festival & Academy?
Ungár: PianoTexas is not only a celebration of musical artistry but also an avenue for international recognition of TCU’s commitment to excellence, mentorship and innovation in the arts. The School of Music looks forward to hosting these remarkable pianists and continuing this tradition of transformative musical experiences.Â
Q: Who is on the jury to select invited performers?
Ungár: Our distinguished jury consists of three internationally renowned musicians from Armenia, Hungary and Taiwan. They have begun the rigorous selection process. Given the exceptional quality of video submissions, their task will not be easy.Â
Q: What key qualities will the jury prioritize when reviewing video submissions and selecting participants for the festival?
Ungár: The selection jury evaluates applicants solely on their performance, as all video recordings are submitted anonymously, without names or identifying details. Their focus is on artistry and originality, ensuring that only the most compelling musicians are chosen. PianoTexas has built a distinguished reputation for identifying and nurturing exceptional young artists who steadily advance into professional careers.Â
PianoTexas invites music enthusiasts to attend one of the Distinguished Artists Recital Series and observe any of its programs that involve the selected pianists. Â
